Toyon is a beautiful shrub for a sunny spot. It tolerates shade and prefers a bit of shade in hot climates. White flowers in summer attract butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. Abundant yellow berries follow in winter and attract birds. A very striking plant for all seasons. Easy to grow and tolerant of many soil types including clay and serpentine. Drought tolerant once established, it is found near creeks and at the bottom of slopes in the wild so it will take some summer water.
Try it with manzanita, lemonade berry, ceanothus, buckwheat, sagebrush, milkweed, salvia, and penstemon. |
