Western redbud is a multi-trunked large shrub or small tree. It can be pruned to a single trunk. Vibrant magenta colored blooms along bare stems in late winter/early spring are a show stopper. This small tree is most gratifying where there is a touch of frost in the winter. Heart shaped broad leaves emerge in the spring with a tinge of red. Later in the season, flattened pea family seed pods decorate the tree. The flowers attract hummingbirds and pollinators; goldfinches love the seeds. |
