One of the most beautiful trees in California or anywhere. Elegant form, glossy red-brown bark, handsome large leaves, sprays of fragrant bell flowers, brilliant red berries in fall which are attractive to birds. Found on north-facing slopes with coast live oak, bay, toyon, cream bush and hazelnut. Can be tricky to establish, likes perfect drainage, lean soils and no summer water once established.
