From steep slopes in grassland, chaparral, and woodland openings. A stunner: clumps of bold, grey-green thistle leaves topped by several magenta flower heads on tall stalks. Tough to grow as it needs perfect drainage, but if you have the site, well worth a try. Hummingbirds and butterflies love the flowers and birds favor the seeds.
